In this quarter's newsletter, we will provide you with an Optimus status update and insight into some exciting future launches. We will also discuss our recent trip to India for the Bengaluru Space Expo 2024, where the team signed two key agreements that will pave the way for our future launches. We also have a very exciting addition to the Space Machines Company team, which you’ll have to keep reading to find out who that is. But let me give you a clue… Australia cricket.

Adelaide Space Forum
We recently attended the Adelaide Space Forum, a gathering of Australian space industry leaders. It was a great opportunity to collaborate and discuss global impact. We were honoured to be recognised by Minister Husic and had productive meetings with the Indian delegation, including IN-SPACe's Dr. Vinod Kumar.
We achieved a significant milestone last month by announcing a dedicated launch for our Optimus spacecraft with NSIL. This historic agreement marks a new era in Australia-India space as it signifies a major leap in our space capabilities. This launch aligns with the Space MAITRI initiative, strengthening our partnership with India.
We’ve had the exciting opportunity for a 3D-built version of Optimus to be featured at theNational Communications Museumin Melbourne! As part of the museum, Artificial Sky is presented in partnership with Swinburne University of Technology's Centre for Astrophysics and in collaboration with Space Machines Company.
We’re excited to announce that former Australian cricketer Steve Waugh has joined Space Machines Company as an ambassador! Steve will be featured in upcoming content and will collaborate with us on the Space MAITRI mission. We kicked things off with a fireside chat hosted by our co-founder, Rajat Kulshrestha.

He also highlighted the successful mission of Optimus and shared what success truly means for the Space Machines Company team as they continue to push the boundaries of innovation and exploration.

My role involves refining our services and technologies to address key issues faced by space operators and ensuring our offerings remain competitive. With three years at SMC, I've moved from intern to product designer, contributing to the development of orbital servicing vehicles and rapid response services. Collaborating with our leadership and engineering teams, I work to ensure our solutions are both innovative and aligned with market needs.”
Autonomy in Space, a pathway to the in-orbit servicing economy
A satellite fails in orbit. Distressed operators, unable to recover their investment, seek help. Within hours, a servicing satellite arrives, begins monitoring, and provides crucial data: images, orientation, temperature, and more. This empowers operators to diagnose the problem and plan a recovery.
Much of this is already possible. The technology exists, and companies like Space Machines Company are developing and demonstrating it. However, scalability is the missing piece. Space operations often require large, highly skilled teams working around the clock. Even simple tasks like changing altitude or approaching another satellite involve complex procedures and multiple approvals. This cautious approach is understandable, given the high-value assets and limited communication in space. While necessary for mission success, it hinders the scalability of in-orbit servicing.
A 20-person operation can service one satellite. But what about 10, 100, or even 1000? A company needing 2000 people to maintain its product would struggle to profit. Moreover, what if a satellite needs a decision when it can't communicate with Earth? Autonomy becomes crucial. Autonomous vehicles can make decisions that once required multiple human approvals. This speeds up service, reduces costs, and allows providers to expand their services while maintaining a lean, efficient team.
At Space Machines Company, we recognise the importance of autonomy for scalability. Our Payloads & Servicing team is committed to minimising commands to the spacecraft. We aim to ensure that the only necessary command is, "There's the target, go service it." This will not only ensure the success of our next service demonstration but also pave the way for hundreds of future services.

Space Machines Company's, Mark Ramsey was recently part of the SpINS Hypothetical Wargame panel, at Southern Space in Canberra. Discussions centered on the role of dual-use technologies in space for rapid response and escalation prevention. The panel highlighted the growing importance of sovereign players like Space Machines Company, in supporting Defence and National Security needs. More info here.
